Walla Walla’s GOP Fundraiser Embraces the Constitutional Clown Show

Apparently basic civics isn’t required to plan a political fundraiser in Walla Walla County. If it were, maybe the local Republican Party wouldn’t be rolling out the red carpet for a bunch of self-declared “constitutional sheriffs.” Men who believe a badge gives them magical powers to overrule Congress, the courts, and reality itself.

Yes, the Walla Walla County Republicans are proudly hosting these folks at a fundraiser — because nothing says “limited government” like law enforcement officers pretending they’re above the law.

Let’s be clear, this isn’t conservatism. It’s cosplay. The “constitutional sheriff” movement claims that county sheriffs are the highest legal authority in the country, empowered to pick and choose which laws to enforce based on their personal interpretation of the Constitution. Not only is that wrong — it’s laughable.

Ask any middle schooler: legislatures make the laws, courts interpret them, and law enforcement enforces them. That’s the American system. That’s what we teach in public schools. But somewhere between YouTube conspiracy theories and militia message boards, these sheriffs decided they know better than the Constitution itself.

And now, the Walla Walla GOP is treating them like headliners at a fundraiser at the Cowboy Church.

This kind of political stunt is more than just embarrassing , it’s dangerous. When law enforcement decides it answers to no one but itself, we stop being a republic governed by law and become a patchwork of rogue enforcers playing constitutional roulette. The idea that one county sheriff can override state or federal law is not a bold defense of freedom. It’s delusion in uniform.

The Constitution is not a “choose your own adventure” pamphlet. It’s a system based on separation of powers , something any high schooler with a decent government teacher could explain. If local Republican leaders in Walla Walla would spend more time listening to their kids and less time coddling fringe ideologues, they might actually learn how our democracy works.

Instead, they’re elevating a movement that’s already been rejected by courts, constitutional scholars, and any honest lawyer who’s passed the bar. This isn’t about protecting liberty, it’s about puffed-up power fantasies dressed in patriotic drag.

Walla Walla deserves better than this circus. Responsible leadership doesn’t mean flattering every loudmouth with a badge and a flag pin. It means standing up for the rule of law , not undermining it for a fundraiser photo op.

So here’s a suggestion for the next county GOP meeting: skip the sheriffs, and bring in a civics teacher. They might not bring the same spectacle, but at least they’ll tell the truth.
